It’s a busy weekend with four wide releases. Unfortunately, unless you like horror, none of them are really worth your time.
RED 2
Before The Expendables, RED (Retired, Extremely Dangerous) brought together aging actors in an outrageous and surprisingly successful action film. After it left theaters, though, I think it left most people’s minds. That didn’t stop a sequel from being made though.
Bruce Willis and company are back. The characters are zany, the action exciting, and the plot is at least comprehensible and sort of semi original. You’ll have fun and then forget about it. A fun action popcorn flick, but nothing too memorable. It’s probably worth seeing it at some point just for John Malkovich though.

The Conjuring
The supposedly true tale of a family haunted by a powerful evil force, and the investigators who help save them from oppression, possession, and death. One of the most beautifully and skillfully filmed pieces this year, and genuinely scary as well. The Conjuring succeeds where so many other horror films fail – it’s a good movie first, with characters you actually care about. If you like the genre – exorcism type horror – you will definitely want to check this one out. Not for the faint of heart though.

R.I.P.D
Ryan Reynolds in another bad, CGI infested, comic book adaptation. Moving on. Oh, you want more? Ok – Ryan Reynolds is a cop who gets killed, inducted into the “Rest In Peace Department,” partnered with a grumpy old Jeff Bridges, and has to save the living world from dead people who don’t want to leave. A limp rip off of Men In Black mixed with Ghostbusters and Dead Like Me. Glad you asked? Avoid this one, please.

Turbo
Turbo is already in theaters with an early Wednesday release. I didn’t get the chance to see this one but I’m hearing it’s entertaining enough for kids, but there is better family friendly fare in theaters right now. It has the ridiculous plot of an ordinary snail, Turbo, (Ryan Reynolds pulling double duty this week) gaining super fast speeds due to an accident involving Nitros Oxide. Things heat up when the super powered Turbo enters the Indy 500. Yep. It’s probably safe to skip this one unless you’re desperate for a kid friendly movie and you’ve seen everything else already.
