Two major releases this weekend, and it’s easy to choose which to see.
Pacific Rim
Giant monsters from another dimension are rising from the ocean and attacking Earth. Giant human-piloted fighting robots fight to defend against this onslaught.
It’s pretty straight forward, but if you think this is just a Transformers / Battleship / Godzilla mashup, think again. Heavily inspired by, and an homage to, the mecha and kaiju anime genres, Pacific Rim is not only the most impressive looking thing you will see in theaters this year, but one of the more original films to come out of American cinema, despite it’s cliches. If any of what I said sounds even slightly appealing, go see it.

Grown Ups 2
Adam Sandler continues to make movies about immature people doing immature things. Surprisingly, though, this is his first sequel. Equally surprising is that from what I hear, it’s actually better than the first. Not surprising – it’s still pretty bad.
This is a case of Sandler and his friends, hanging out, and bringing a film crew and something masquerading as a plot along for the ride. I laughed, maybe more than I’d like to admit, but it’s still really bad. Skip it, if only to go see the far superior in every way Pacific Rim. Rent it down the road if you want a cheap laugh and you’re with the right kind of friends. You know who I’m talking about.
