Weekend Preview – June 21, 2013

The Bling Ring Poster

A couple worthy blockbusters and an interesting indie film coming at you this weekend!

World War Z Poster

World War Z

Based on the novel of the same name, World War Z is the story of Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt), one man traveling the globe in search of answers to a worldwide zombie epidemic.

When the planet is suddenly and inexplicably overrun by the violent undead, former UN investigator, Gerry, embarks on a journey across the globe to find out what happened, and how to fix it, in order to keep his family safe.

It is, on occasion, surprisingly slow for being a zombie thriller.  At times it is more interesting than exciting, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.  It’s a lot more plot driven than a lot of zombie movies with a clear goal with clear importance and a detective story that unfolds at a steady pace.  It’s a worthy entry into the genre’s library and worth a watch on the big screen.

Monsters University Poster

Monsters University

The third Pixar property to be revisited, and the first prequel from the animation studio, Monsters University takes place an unspecified number of years before Monsters Inc, introducing us to Mike and Sulley (Billy Crystal and John Goodman returning to the roles) when they first meet in college.  Steve Buscemi also reprises his role as Randall.  A plethora of voice talent joins them as new characters.

It’s a great movie, and even if it’s not as groundbreaking as some of Pixar’s other works, it’s got a lot going for it.  What it doesn’t have going for it is the element of surprise, being a prequel.  We know Mike and Sulley and who they become.  There’s a lot of fun to be had along the way though, and the whole thing plays a bit like a kid-friendly Revenge of the Nerds.   I really wanted it to be a masterpiece to completely silence the naysayers.  It’s not quite there, but is certainly enough to prove Pixar still knows what they’re doing.

The Bling Ring Poster
The Bling Ring

Expanding into wide release this weekend, The Bling Ring is based on the true exploits of a group of California teens with nothing better to do than track down where celebrities homes are in order to rob them.  I haven’t had the chance to see this one yet, but it sounds pretty interesting and stars Emma Watson.  Reviews so far have been more or less positive, though not resoundingly so.  Still, it sounds like an opportunity to take a look at celebrity, fame, crime, and youth, all bundled into a nice indie film based on real events.  If this weekends big screen blockbusters aren’t your speed, this could definitely be worth seeking out.
