Weekend Preview – April 5, 2013

Evil Dead 2013 Poster

It’s a slow weekend coming up with the only new wide releases being a 3D re-release of a twenty year old movie and a remake of horror classic from 1981.

Jurassic Park 3D Poster

If any classic film might be able to justify the argument for a 3D conversion, Jurassic Park has to be it.  After all, lush landscapes and terrifying T-Rex’s seem to be just begging to be in your face.  Sadly, that is not the case.

At worst, characters and scenery have a cardboard cutout feel to them, and at best the depth of the landscapes looks pretty.  For the most part, if I wasn’t wearing the uncomfortable and glare inducing IMAX glasses, I wouldn’t have realized I was watching something in 3D half the time.

In the end, for being such an old movie, it holds up remarkably well.  The combination of digital and physical affects stand the test of time, and it’s still a well made, fun film.  I don’t know that it’s worth shelling out IMAX 3D cash for, but this is a great chance to see it on the big screen if you missed it the first time around, or to share it with a younger generation.

Evil Dead 2013 Poster

A remake of the cult classic NC-17 rated and Bruce Campbell starring The Evil Dead from Sam Raimi.  With a few exceptions, horror isn’t really my thing and I have never seen the original and was not able to screen this one.  I think I know enough about each though to give you a rundown:

Evil is released in some form which terrorizes a group of people.  Lots of people die in extremely gruesome and disturbing ways.

Did I get it all in there?  I’m sure if you are a fan of the genre, this is something you will surely want to check out, if only to debate whether this one disturbed you better than the Bruce Campbell original.
